At present, vehicle in China is growing rapidly. The urban road traffic jambecomes seriously. In such circumstances, monitoring the position of the vehiclein time and controlling vehicle is the methed that can not only solve the problemsof how to improve transportation efficiency but also promote social development,reduce the consumption of energy and protect our natural environment.The system uses GPS to provide accurate location information of vehicle andtransfers the information to monitor PC by GPRS. Vehicle position will bedisplayed on the software of Google Earth. By the above position, monitoringpersonnel can judge the situation and direct the traffic easily.The vehicle position monitoring system of this paper can be divided into twoparts: one part is the system of GPS&GPRS in car and the other is the software onmonitor PC.In the part of system of GPS&GPRS in car, the GPS module uses the GPS-25which comes from GARMIN Company in Taiwan, and the GPRS module usesSIM300which comes from Simcom Company. This paper chooses TI's ultralowpower consumption mixed signal microcontroller MSP430as the MCU. In thehardware system, The MSP430microcontroller works as the main control chip.GPS module gets the information of vehicle position and sends it to the MSP430microcontroller. Then MSP430takes control of GPRS module and sends theinformation to monitor PC which is online. The software on monitor PC is writtenby VC++, and will automatic calls Google Earth API functions to take control ofGoogle Earth. The position information of vehicle will be displayed on computer.So that users can monitor the car easily.This paper has studied the design of GPS&GPRS vehicle position monitoringsystem, including the hardware and software. Hardware contains GPS module,GPRS module, microcomputer circuit design and PCB design. Software containsthe program of MSP430control GPS&GPRS module and the program which isused to take control of Google Earth on PC.The experiment results show that the system can get the information ofvehicle position, and send the information to monitor PC. The system runs steadilyand reliably, and meets the design requirements.
