XML has achieved great succcess as standard document format for writing and exchanging information on the Web, XML data has become the most ccommon data format afer ratinal data. However, as the widespread application of XML in data exchange and application integration, one of the limitations of XML has been well-known:"XML formally governs syntax only– not semantics". This limitation brings at least two proplems for XML: (1) the gap between XML and Semantic Web, i.e. XML data and related technolgies can not applied to Semantic Web area; (2) the gap between XML and business semantics. i.e. the difficulty for XML-based Enterprise Information Integration and Enterrpris Application Integration and the diffculty for integration of XML data and business rule.To solve these problems, this dissertation analyzes the semantics issues of XML, and proposes a generation method based on XML2OWL from XML document to OWL document. The method is divided into three parts, starting with the XML instance document to generate a XML Schema (if not); then use the mapping rules of XS2OWL to map XML Schema to OWL model; then OWL model which is generated from the previous step guide the conversion from the XML instance document to OWL document. We have implemented the method and verified. Experimental results show that the method can achieve the enhancement from grammar-level of XML documents to semantic-level of OWL documents.
