On The Transformation Of The Roles And Functions Of The Media In Society

This thesis is based on author's practices as a journalist and discussing on the role and functions that media should play and have during social transformation in China. The author suggested that the media should become a platform that jointly involved and constructed by the party, government, media professionals and public to exchange and share information, views and ideas.This platform shall not only be regarded as a tool to guide public opinions in one-way communication but also actively play a role as coordinator to form public opinions in compromising and common agreement so as to lay the foundation for harmony society.The author also suggested that the lost and misplaced of media's role and functions in China at current stage are caused by the mismatch between traditional journalism theories and actual media practices in social transformation in China.In conclusion, the author analyzed the cause of mislaid role and functions of media in China according to the reality of China reform and Chinese media, and suggested the media shall play a role as coordinator to apply the functions of exchange and sharing in order to improve the development of civil society. Moreover, the author also created a theoretical frame of developing journalism on the base of comprehensive analysis.
