The image stitching technology, which blends two or more images into a new image with larger visual angle, higher resolution and all the image information, is one of hot topics of the computer vision and image processing area. This technology is widely used in virtual reality, remote sensing, photogrammetry, medical treatment, computer graphics and military affairs.One kind of popular virtual 3d roaming system is the panorama roaming system. The key of this system is panoramic image mosaic technology. The technologies about how to create panoramic image from the images or video sequence have been studied. The following improvements and achievements are presented:(1) A new panoramic image stitching algorithm based on scale invariant feature transform and Levenberg-Marquardt optimization is proposed. Mapping the source planar images to a cylindrical surface is the first step. Then, correct matching feature pairs are detected between two images by SIFT algorithm. Finally the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm is used for calculating the initial estimates of motion parameters. Experiment results show that this method is effective against the hand-held camera motion with small rotation around the optical axis, small horizontal and vertical movement.(2) Presents a new approach to create panoramic mosaic using a video sequence. Unlike the widely used panoramic image stitching algorithm which need calculate the coordinate system transformation between image and cylinder surface, this method identify the cylinder surface as a particular manifold. It transforms the traditional image alignment into only calculate the strips used for construct the manifold, so the process ignores the status and optical property of camera. Experiment results show that this method is computationally effective even without use tripod, and with property of fast calculation.
