With the fast development of Chinese railway in recent years, the traffic safety of trains is paid more and more attention. Pantograph can obtain the current from the contract for the normal running of the train. Therefore the safety running of pantograph demands more and more. Because the traditional detection mathods ware lower precision and accuraty, an online and non-contract detection mathods are used for many countries,it which provides reliable guarantee for safety running can detect the thickness of pantograph real-time and precisely.In this paper, after lots of research and learning, a industrial cameral with high resolution and industrial flash with high reliability and stability are selected as the main experimental equipment. Based on the mode of Yang-shot, verity experiments in workshops and real-filded were done to verify the feasibility and versatikity of experimental system. Then the abrasion images ware captured dynamically, subsequently taking advantage of digital image precessing,the up and down edges of pantograph ware detected and located. It is very important for accurately detecting the edge of pantograph.First, this paper thoroughly investigates some detecting technologies for pantograph which base on digital image processing for pantograph at home and abroad, on the basis of Yang-shot mode which the location of installing camera is below the contract and the location of flashes are high the contract to capture pantograph images, at the same time, in workshop lots of experiments ware done to verify the feasibility and versatikity of experimental system. Secondly, based on the theoretical basis, a new experimental program which was re-adjusted according to the installation and operating environment in the fild was inspected and verified once again. Finally, based on the MATLAB and Visual C++ platform, the image processing technology that included the detection theory and related algorithms was used to detected and located the edge of pantograph. Camera calibration algorithm can calculate the internal and external parameters and corrected the lens distortions,then the actual thickness of pantograph was obtained and the sliding ware as counted. The results show that the system can accomplish expected detection tasks, with non-contact, high efficiency, high precision and so on. The results of research propose certain theoretical and practical significance for pantograph detection system of high-speed railway and metro in China.
