With the rapid development of communication networks, network structure and protocol configurations become more complex and manual configuration of the network have been more and more difficult. Some of the existing discription formates, such as Block diagram or Excel tables, can not provide a precise, unambiguous way to describe the network. Therefore, a discription language that can provide the infomation of network topology and protocol configuration in a unified, complete, accurate description form is required. This target currently becomes the hot topics in the industry field. In this thesis, the author firstly analyses in detail the widely used routing protocol, such as OSPF, ISIS, BGP and their relationships, and studies the theory and application of MPLS technology. Secondly, we describes the XML and XSLT format conversion technology, and then analyses the reasonable and extension approaches for further improvement. It's also explored an accurate description of network. A description language structure is proposed, which is based on the XML syntax, to describe the network topology and protocol configuration. Comparation with OPNET's way is provided at last. The author gives some specific designed cases decribed by the defined language, and designed a convert program import to OPNET to simulate for checking avalilability and validation. The research shows that the proposed language has 20% incresement than OPNET's XML format for describing simulation configurations, but more clear hierarchical struction and better legibility.
