The wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are the hotspot research of current sensor technology. Much attention are focused in this paper on the design of the hardware architecture for wireless sensor network node, the development of the sensor node's hardware and software and its structural health monitoring application system. A structural health monitoring system based on the developed node, named as Cute1, was built by the pattern matching method. The structure health monitoring system was able to monitor the connection bolt loosing on the structure. In this paper, the theory of the wireless sensor networks is firstly discussed. The WSNs applications can be divided into three classes: environmental data collection, security monitoring and target location. The WSNs system metrics and design requirements for WSNs nodes are also presented. Secondly, based on the design requirements, the hardware architecture is presented for the wireless sensor network nodes. Based on this design idea, the development of a wireless sensor node has been completed and the hardware performances are tested. Regarding the software system, an open-source operating system named TinyOS designed for the wireless embedded sensor networks is analyzed in detail on the architecture, kernel, communication and low-power operations. The software design approach based on this platform is also presented. The main software modules are developed using this design approach. Finally, a composite structural health monitoring system based on the Cute1 wireless platform is developed to implement the bolt loose localization. In the future work, more attention will be focused on the performance improvement of wireless sensor nodes, and deployment of large-scale structural health monitoring system for real aviation composite structures.
