While more and more major incidents are happening as we enter the new century, the news reports in China covering these incidents are more and more profound and the audience is growing as well. Though the quality and time-sensitivity of the reports are improving, and accuracy and objectiveness are achieved, there is a lot of room for improvement. We need to have further studies on how to improve in this aspect.This paper first illustrates on the concept and features of major incidents, based on the background information and incident description. Through the case of Songhua River pollution, the paper explains the theoretic basis and value of news reports on such major incidents. The concept changes within reports on mine accidents and strategies changes in covering SARS are discussed. Thus, the paper concludes that the domestic media is becoming more and more mature after all these changes. The media's role of guiding the public and offering psychological reliefs are valued. Quantity analysis is adopted while studying the cases of Wenchuan Earthquake and 3.14 Incident in Tibet. Based on these cases and statistics, the features of media in new era are elaborated. The paper suggests that in such a new situation, the media needs to improve on sticking to press principles and strategies.
