The establishment of animal by-products traceability system(APTS) is the effective method to ensure the quality of animal by-products. In generally, for establishing and operating the APTS, the RFID technology would be used by recording all the information from production to consumption of the identified animal through the electronic tags attached them. and then, reading all these information by RFID reader and input them into the computer, which will be the information collection terminal of the APTS.The RFID reader is the research target of this subject, and which is used to collect the livestock's information. Firstly, we studied the characteristics of the reader used in the livestock identification, and completed the definition of the reader system's function and performance indexes, and defined the reader can function under the handhold mode and the PC mode. After that, based on the modular design method and the functions of the system, we select the appropriate device, and design the Peripheral circuits of each module, and eventurally set up a hardware platform (including the JTAG interface) for the reader which can run on the bread board.After finishing the hardware platform for the reader, we continue to complete the design of software systems. With the supporting of the relevant development softwares, using the ICCAVR C language, we design and realize the driver programs for the chips and data processing routines, and then finish the main program which calls these subroutines for the design of software systems (which working in the handhold mode and PC mode), so far , we finished the software systems designs. Then, after compiling them successfully, donwload the executable programs to the hardware platform through the JTAG interface.Debug the software and the hardware on the bread board untill the whole system can work normally. Then, after testing, the system schema of software and hardware is OK. Finally drawing the PCB board for the reader, thus, all the development for the reader is completed.After the completion of the development project, this paper is writed on this issue. On the first, it introduced the related technologies of RFID systems, and then present the developments of the hardware and software of the reader individually. According to the compositions of the system , this paper introduced all the problems one by one– in hardware design, software design, and PCB design, all of them should be paid attention to.At the last part of the paper, we specified the test methods to the key indexes of the reader, and the ways to improve the reader's functions.
