With the development of computer technology, the digital image processing and pattern recognition technology are getting unprecedented development and application. Its research methods are learning from other sciences in mutual emulation. Image recognition technology has been paid attention to and achieved great pioneering achievement in the biomedical engineering field such as the characteristics extraction and recognition of stored-grain microbes and the characteristics extraction and recognition of water microbes.Normally, for each protozoa and metazoan recognition and quantification is done through a microscope and dependent on artificially to implementation completely. This means that the investigators need to have higher professional knowledge and a lot of work time in this daily work. In addition, the artificial style is inefficient and human-error. This paper focused on the research of the computer aided recognition of protozoa and metazoan in activated sludge, using the characteristics of image recognition technology combined with microscopic images. With the research of microscopic image preprocessing method, the paper proposes a set of original and metazoan extraction plan, including gray-level transformation, Gamma equalization, Median-mean filter, Two-class edge enhancement, Two-means clustering operation, Morphological opening operation and Largest connected component detection. Experiments show that the proposed approach can automatically extract protozoan parasite from the microscopic images.Firstly, the paper introduces the background and significance of research, and makes a simple overview of digital image preprocessing technologies. Then the paper has a detailed introduction of image preprocessing methods which are used in image processing. And it makes a contrast with the traditional image preprocessing method. The flowchart of system will be presented at last. The original image will be partitioned equally, combining with the multithread technique of MFC, realizing the automatically extract protozoan parasite from the microscopic images.
