Reading is one of the most important ways to absorb the language material, enlarge the knowledge of language and gain the important information for the readers, and it is also an important means to obtain language input. At present the full mark of the English paper for the College Entrance Examination is 150 scores, 40 scores of the reading part included. The reading part depends on the whole grade of the synthetical. What's more, for most students the reading part is the weakest of all .For a long time, many high school English teachers have regarded the reading teaching as an important English teaching goal. However, during teaching most teachers always break down reading materials into isolated knowledge of the language teaching points. In fact, only focusing on the mastery of linguistic knowledge is not enough in training students'reading ability. We must use different articles to guide students to analyse a passage so that students can control a passage.In the 1990s genre teaching approach, which is based on the whole text analysis, is quite different from the traditional reading teaching.The traditional reading teaching can only make students know language points but not the text. Genre teaching approach also plays a very important part in training students'awareness of genre and students'ability to master a certain discourse. Therefore, Genre teaching approach is supposed to be quite helpful for teachers to train students'language communicative competence. Genre Teaching Approach applies genre analysis theory to the English reading teaching and offers the students the discourse scheme structure. Nowadays genre teaching approach is paid much more attention to by teachers in the college reading and writing teaching and it has achieved pretty good efficiency.The experiment which lasted for one term was peformed among students in Grade Three in Baicheng No.1 Middle School. The purpose of my paper is that genre teaching approach can also be used in the teaching of EFL reading instruction in high schools so as to build up students'knowledge of genre structure, which can improve their reading competence in future.To achieve this purpose, six different models of reading instruction are introduced. During the implementation of genre-based teaching approach, teachers shoud improve the students'integrating reading ability by analyzing the generic structure and linguistic features of a certain genre, and students are able to analyze a text by themselves and consult ome useful materials through many channels when they come acoss a text. The result of the study shows:The genre teaching approach really has an enormous effect on training students'awareness of genre and ability to grasp a discourse, It can also improve students'abilities of finding main ideas and get rid of students'bad reading habits.Although this thesis is just a tentative work,the researcher hopes the findings will offer some useful references and insightful perspectives to those who are interested in further exploring the genre analysis teaching method.
