Abstract/Summary:
In the late 20th Century, as the new challenges had come out in the field of UK Higher Education, such as how to further enhance the popularity of Higher Education, to satisfy the higher demand for the qualities and responsibilities of Higher Education from the society and to meet the increasing needs of advancing the graduates' vocational skills and the cultivation of the students' self-management and lifelong-learning abilities, there in 1997 bred the Dearing Report. The report recommended the establishment of Progress File, in which Personal Development Planning is one of two components of the Progress File. After that, Personal Development Planning was launched in UK Higher Education. Students, as the subjects, reflect their own merits and faults on the basis of self-identification and self-awareness, as well as the development of the professional knowledge, career objectives and transferable skills. They also record their growth in university academic abilities and vocational skills and personal growth in performance, capability cultivation, goal accomplishment and practical demonstrations.The essay comprehensively introduces the concept, theoretical base of Personal Development Planning as well as its practical implementation. Thereafter attach the practices in Personal Development Planning of the undergraduates, taught postgraduate students, research postgraduate students of English Department from the Faculty of Humanities in Manchester University. Grounded on the UK Personal Development Planning experience, the essay further brings out the suggestion in the improvement of our country higher education. Personal Development Planning benefits not only the students themselves but also teachers, colleges, employers and the society. Our country higher education should draw from the relevant experience and put more effort to enhance the quality of personnel training and deliver more high-quality, specialized and innovative talents for the National development.
