Researches On Time Adverbs In The Scholars

The Scholars symbolizes the establishment of a brand new epoch of Chinese literature. This paper classifies the time adverbs in The Scholars and researches the semantic and grammatical functions of them by means of frequency statistical analysis, semantic and grammatical Categories, valency theory and so on, which leads to the conclusion that, from the view of part of speech, except two time adverbs which need to be converted into nouns, almost all time adverbs in The Scholars maintain the same part of speeches in modern Chinese, but the disyllabic time adverbs obviously take the main part in modern Chinese; Pragmatically, the positions of them are always before bivalent verbs or at the beginning of a sentence as adverbials, which basically stay the same in modern Chinese, but the collocations are more diverse than the modern Chinese; and semantically, time adverbs perform as the cohesive devices of the context.This paper describes the semantic, grammatical and pragmatical functions of time adverbs in The Scholars by four chapters. The first chapter, the preface stated the writer's purpose and thoughts by researching the functions of the adverbs in modern Chinese, the linguistic value of The Scholars and the achievements of linguistic research in The Scholars. The secend chapter, the summary of the adverbs in The Scholars, which calculated and classified the time adverbs in The Scholars separately, so as to get three branches of time adverbs. The researches of time adverbs, the third chapter, in which the writer made further research on the three branches and led to conclusion. The fourth chapter, the conclusion, in which the writer described and concluded the previous chaptersThis paper researches the time adverbs in The Scholars from the aspects of the Semantic features, valency theory,empty category and semantic orientations, with the purpose to provide some valuable materials and do little part in the research of the Chinese history.
