Based on the Appraisal theory of Martin, this thesis illustrates the relationship between subject and object in the Bible, which is the classic of Christianity. The subject is God and the objects include his chosen ones and the Gentiles. The thesis studies their attitude toward each other and the Engagement resource, the ways of heterogloss in the Bible and explores the interpersonal meaning of modality resource. According to the analysis, within the attitude system, the closeness of relationship between God and his chosen ones is different from God and the Gentiles. The attitude of God and his chosen ones toward each other is tend to be positive. The interaction between God and his chosen ones is more than God and the Gentiles. And the attitude of God is negative toward the Gentiles revealed God's judgment on the behaviour of the Gentiles. Within the Engagement system, the stance and opinions in the Bible is mainly expressed by dialogic contraction, and within contraction, disclaim plays most important rule to indicate ideas. It helps subject and object make their statements "valid" and "reliable". The author explores the interpersonal meaning of the modality in the Bible. For modality in the Bible, it functions as to shorten the distance between God and his people and it helps to demonstrate the authority, status and power of God. It also exhibits God's love to his chosen ones. The thesis helps readers and believers have a better understanding of the relationship of subject and object in the Bible and to understand western culture better since the profound influence of the Bible on western countries and people.
