Chinese is lack of morphology and form changes. It mainly depends on word order to express definite grammatical meaning. The research of word order occupies an essential position in Chinese grammatical research. Chinese itself is complex and the grammar is not only boring, but not easy to grasp. This thesis tries to analyse the cognitive mechanism of forming Chinese word order from the iconicity principle in cognitive linguistics, which is combined to teach Chinese as a second language to discuss the problem of word order. This thesis is divided into four chapters. In the introduction part, it briefly introduces the general views about constituent order. Chapter Two first introduces the general situation of the iconicity principle. And it main states the embodyment of the iconicity theory in cognitive linguistics from four areas: Sequencing Iconicity, Distance Iconicity, Quantitative Iconicity, Symmetry Iconicity. Chapter Three interprets the character of Chinese word order from the comparison of Chinese-English sentence pattern. To some extent, Chinese could embody Sequencing Iconicity and the copy of the objective world better and better. Chapter Four collects the main problems of the wrong sentences appearing on word order, then classifies and rearranges these wrong sentences, at last analyses the reason of these sentences. Chapter Five applies Iconicity theory to the teaching Chinese as a second language, and it will better serve our teaching .
