The Nationalism Narrative In Mew Era's Historical Novels

In this paper, I take the perspective of nationalism when deal with the new era's historical novels. Novel in the history of modern Chinese literature bound together with the fate of the nation-state from the beginning. As a unique carrier and powerful call to imagine the nation-state, literature was consciously dripped into the process of revolutionary. Nationalism has played a crucial role. "Nation-state" was not born and raised in China, "national", "nationalism" are Western concepts,products of modernity. As Benedict Anderson said:"A nation is a imagined political community --- and it is considered as a limited community,but be of sovereign." Anthony Smith-- the British sociologist,believes that:"Nationalism is an ideological campaign which aimed at seeking autonomy and individuality for a social group. Some members hope that the nationalism can form a nation." In different situations, there will be different definitions of nationalism, depending on the specific context. Which is crucial is that how to treat these concepts in Chinese context. The nationalism discussed in this article can be taken as national pride, proud,which committed to the construcion of state, not separation. Precisely, we can not call all of the twentieth century's Chinese literary texts as "national allegory", one theory can not cover all the specific phenomenas. We just take this formulation, as an angle intervene into twentieth century's Chinese literature, as a point of view, an effort, an attemption to see the different literary landscape.The paper mainly divided into three parts:the foreword, the body, and the conclusion.The foreword introduced the history and current situation of national allegory. The main part has 3 chapters. The first chapter is "the combination of nationalism and historical novels", the causes are "the nationalist aspirations of Historical Novels".the call of the mainstream ideology, the nationalism of historical fictions' writers. The second chapter is "the way of national identity's construction", divided into self-identity within the ethnic and the "national enemy" who on the reverse also constructed national identity. Identities within nations are divided into a common ancestor and cultural ancestry and national hero and former glory, the ancestral land and the landscape,these all construct the national identity together. The third chapter is about the nameing of the journey of modernization, divided into three sections, namely:the critical of natioal character as the base of modernization,the review of tragic chaos as the call for modernization, bridge the historical reform and modernization.The great rejuvenation of nation is the common dream of all Chinese. In essence, the combination of national identity, is the base of national modernization. Rectification of names for the modernization, is the reflection of writers'nationalism.Epilogue describes the nationalism narrative in historical novels and literary's "re-politicization." I think that nationalism narrative of literary is a kind of "political", but not kneel down to the specific policies and regulations. In the pursuit of national independence and modernization, the historical fiction writers stood together with the mainstream ideology of the state. Literary writers use their own creative works and narrative practice, take part into the pursuit. This is a intervene spirit which literature must have, rather than losing of subjectivity and soul.In the face of globalization and Western's invation, the Chinese literature can not just be literature itself, literature is political, literature take part in the provement for the legitimacy of the nation-state.
