Bankimchandra Chatterjee(1838-1894)is a famous Indian novelist.He published fourteen novels,including seven social realistic novels and seven historical novels.In addition,he also wrote a lot of literature reviews,covering various aspects.He hosted a Bengali progressive publication,Bangadarsan,which aims to establish a medium for communication between educated and uneducated people so that more people can come into contact with progressive ideas and pay more attention to social issues.Bankim also led the religious reform movement,established the New Vaishnavism,and promoted new religious concepts to Indians.Except for great literary accomplishments,he is also an anti-colonial warrior.By way of creating historical novels,he promoted nationalist ideas,and made outstanding contributions to anti-British colonialist movement and national liberation movement finally.This thesis consists of three parts: introduction,text and conclusion.The introduction part summarizes the creations of Bankimchandra Chatterjee,at the same time summarized the domestic and foreign scholars' research on Bankim's thoughts and creations,and focuses on the research of the academic world on Bankim's historical novels and Indian nationalism,understand the current research situation.The text is divided into three chapters,which are discussed from the following three aspects: the choice of subject matter under the direction of nationalism,the reconstruction of Indian image,and the influence of nationalist ideas on the creation of historical novels.The first chapter discusses the social conditions that promote the national consciousness of Bankim,and combs the characteristics of Bankim's nationalism.In the context of literary history and cultural history,exploring the relationship between nationalism and historical novels,and discerning the form of selecting historical novels by Bankim,it is not only the need of artistic creation,but also the ideology of nationalism.The second chapter analyzes some of Bankim's historical novels,and investigates how Bankim reconstructs the national culture and rebuilds the image of India through the dimension of power and gender in the historical narrative.The third chapter analyzes the linear narrative time and the legendary characteristics of Bankim's historical novels.Under the influence of nationalist ideology,Bankim innovated and inherited traditional Indian literature through the use of linear narrative structures and the use of surreal elements.The conclusion points out the limitations of the nationalist interpretation of Bankim's historical novels,and the role played by Bankim's nationalism in Indian politics and literature.Bankim used historical fiction as a vehicle to promote his nationalist ideas,accelerated the process of modernization in India,and provided guidance and lessons for later nationalists.At the same time,Bankim's literary creation was innovative while inheriting traditions.Reflects the transformation of Indian literature from traditional to modern.
