On July 24th 1957, the Harvest, the first large purely literary journal in new China edited by Ba Jin and Jin Yi was born. It published every types of literature of the old writers and the new writers with the purpose to making the literature of China more prosperous, training and supporting more outstanding writers. From the column setup between 1949 to 1966, the most important column of the Harvest was "novel". This was a difficult thing at that time. The Harvest always criticized by others because of the column of "novel". They said that it rarely issued the works which could swiftly respond to the social reality, so it was unable to keep up with the pace of the times. In order to survive, the editorial department had to compromise. They weaken the important status of the "novel" and increased the issue of the short works. Though under the great pressure, the "novel" had been conserved. It issued some outstanding novels and promoted the prosperity and development of the 17-Year Novels. In the 17-Year, the Harvest had issued twenty-eight novels. Many of these novels were quite important, they almost can represent the highest achievement of the novels at that time. Therefore, the "novel" was the most successful column of the Harvest. It reflected the feature and value of the Harvest. The success of the "novel" has many reasons:first, the new regime's consolidation needed the instrumentality of the novels; secondly, in peace years, writers had conditions and enthusiasm to writing novels; finally, the advantages of the Harvest made it get more excellent novels. We can learn more from the success of the Harvest. |
