Over the history, the Dai nationality, living in Yunnan province has been getting along well with nature during the long period of production and practice. They have formed a series of simple lifestyles as well as perceptions during the process of depending on the ecological environment and concluding the ecological laws and principles. Relying on nature, they change their life by learning about ecological environment. This thesis is aimed to study the wells specifically which were constructed by Dai nationality in order to survive.Currently, the research carried out by foreign courtiers on wells constructed by Chinese minorities is relatively rare, especially the one mainly focusing on wells by the Dai nationality, which is empty in the foreign world. This thesis mainly adopted the following ways---document searching, on-the-spot observation and study, analysis and comparison, demonstration and systematic induction method. Besides, it also analyzes the modeling, function together with the art of decoration of well from the angle of Art of Design.First, this thesis analyzes the water source of wells belonging to the Dai nationality in Xishuangbanna by searching the documents, then us finding the historical backgrounds of wells in central plain areas and Xishuangbanna. In the meanwhile, through comparison and analysis, this essay compares the wells of the Dai nationality in Xishuangbanna with those in Jianshui, those of Naxi nationality in Lijing, and those dating back to early period of China respectively. The study mainly covers its construction technology, modeling, function, decoration and color. Then follows the field observation and study that is based on the visits to a few villages attached to Menghan Town and Gasa Town in Jing Hong. During the field observation and study, the writer visited over ten stockaded villages one after another, got the related materials about the construction technology and construction process of the wells of the Dai nationality and took about one hundred pictures. According to all of these above, this thesis, on the one hand, analyzes the modeling of the wells, thus drawing the conclusion that the modeling of the well is divided into two categories:auspicious poultry and beasts; Buddhist temples and pagodas or pavilions. In addition, the relationship between the mentioned two modeling and Therava, Dai nationality original religions as well as the cultures of the Han nationality is further analyzed through document searching and field observation. On the other hand, apart from the study on its modeling, this thesis also analyzes its function, decoration, and the application of the colors by using the related knowledge about color formation. At last, this thesis systematically states and induces the study results of each part through demonstration and systematic induction method. It also conveys the author views and suggestions about the protection and passing down of wells in Xishuangbann. The ones of Dai nationality embody its unique culture and shouldn be ignored or drowned in the modern society but should be paid enough attention and protected. Of all the protection means, Jing Hong sets an good example featured by the well statues, which is also the reapplication of well design of the Dai nationality.
