The Lord of the Rings trilogy was written by British writer J.R.R.Tolkien who was live in Mid-20th century. This book was known as "Century Book". In the new century Peter Jackson a director of Hollywood has adapted this book into film and received big success.From the perspective of narrative, The Lord of the Rings whether as fiction or film all tell a same story in the story layer, but in the text layer in which they become different text. This is because in the narrative the novel text using printed media symbol and the film text using film media symbol. The different media symbol lead to different narrative strategy. So the successful of the film adaptation depend on the effective use of narrative strategy.In the narrative, the'narrator and focalization','character','plot','time and space' are four basic elements of narrative text. This article will compare the two kinds of texts of The Lord of the Rings in these four aspects, and analysis the difference between the two texts in narrative strategies and aesthetic effects. Finally, from a series of analysis will get some successful strategy of film adaptation.
