The Lord of the Rings, written by Tolkien, was published in the 1950 s.In the context of industrialization and world wars,Tolkien has witnessed severe ecological issues caused by modern industrialization. Therefore,he combined these issues with fantasy to express his strong dissatisfaction with industrialization in the novel.During the 1970 s and 1980 s,the rise of ecological philosophy gave the novel's explicit ecological themes firm academic support. This thesis is designed to make an analysis of The Lord of the Rings from the perspective of nature, society and human spirit. This paper aims to explore the reasons of Tolkien's thought, and then interprets the ecological problems as well as his ecological pursuit that is implied in the novel. It includes five parts. In the first part, the research background, studying status at home and abroad, and the realistic significance of this study are introduced. The second part analyzes the roots of Tolkien's ecological thought. The third part explores ecological problems from aspects of nature, society and human spirit in the novel. The fourth part is a discussion of Tolkien's ecological pursuit. The conclusion part mainly gives a summary of the above chapters, and ideological reasons for ecological problems. It is hoped that this thesis, while exploring the ecological thought of the novel,is able to make readers realize the common responsibility for the earth ecology that human beings should shoulder.
