Abstract/Summary:
"The Lord of the Rings" is one of the great works with wealth explanation. Former research results focus on the analysis of the characters, plots, themes and the background, which are relatively independent and no connection inside concerned.This article attempts to combine them together to accomplish the further interpretation, based on the view of temptation.The paper consists of three parts. The first part is the explanation of the "The Lord of the Rings" from the point of the temptation. Temptation itself is vitally important to the plot of the work, which is not only the Motif of the work but the key to the development of the story as well. In the point of character detail, this article summarizes the reasons that people were unable to defeat temptation, and extends this weakness to the current people. When it comes to the environment, this article compares the features of the wilderness in the work to the wilderness imagery in the Western literary tradition.On terms of the theme,"The Lord of the Rings" presented the evils in the heart of mankind, but the kindness of human nature at the same time. Secondly, this article attempts to analysis Tolkien’s own life experiences and to bring "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Bible" together for the comparison of cultures in both works.Finally, this article consulted the traditional Chinese fantasy novel "Journey to the West" on the platform of the temptation, to discover the similarities and differences between Eastern and Western cultural traditions.Through these studies, it is possible for a more profound understanding and comprehensive interpretation of the temptation in "The Lord of the Rings", and a more systematic understanding of the temptation in "The Lord of the Rings".
