The biggest difference of the phonetics between Chinese and Japanese lies in tones. For Japanese students who come from the country which has no tones in its language, it is hard for them to cultivate the concept of tones in Chinese language. In Chinese, especially its third tone and the regularity of tone sand bring difficulty to Japanese students who have basic knowledge of Chinese. We get the general knowledge of how good they can control the third tone by surveying listening error of two-syllable words and pronunciation error. We collected pronunciation information of Japanese students about the third tone monosyllabic words and its disyllabic words, then analyze them by Praat, a phonetics analyzing software. We compared the phonetic data of Japanese students from Praat with Chinese native speakers. We summarized the types and features of incorrect the third tone pronunciation from both output and input. From the aspect of negative transfer of mother-tongue, the third tone sand, we analyzed the cause of error by adopting the theory of interlanguage, Contractive Analysis, and Error Analysis. According to the result, we came up with some teaching suggestions of the third tone especially for those basic-level Japanese students who learning Chinese. We proposed teaching methods and suggestions such as tone pitch teaching, posture teaching and pictorial method, in the hope of improving the third tone teaching to Japanese students in the future.
