Wu Rulun was the representative figure of Tongcheng School in late Qing Dynasty. He was good at Chinese knowledge, and his thought was relatively enlightened. He had actively advocated and spread western civilization. Because his proficiency in both Chinese and western culture, he had been appointed as the head teacher of the Imperial University of Peking and sent to Japan to investigate educational system. This is paving the way for him the foundation of Western China。The first chapter starts from the transformation of modern academy and the origin of Wu Rulun's western theory, and investigate the source of reality and theroy in Wu Rulun's academy. Modern China political and social crisis had been increasing, prompting people to re-examine the traditional academic. People had concerned practical knowledge again. But traditional practical learning cannot solve the crisis in modern China, so people had looked to western "useful learning". But when he had passed the imperial examination, he had chosen to assist Zen Guofan and Li Hongzhang,and then Wu Rulun had begun contacted the western learning. After the Opium War, the western colonial powers had been more and more powerful in China, China must face the reality and the western learning. This was the bridge to learn western for Chinese. Wu Rulun had had ambition to benefit the society and this was his theoretical basis to accept the western learning.The second chapter mainly analysis how Wu Rulun accept and disseminate western theory gradually. As an officer in Shen Zhou and Ji Zhou, Wu Rulun had wanted to do something, so he had exerted all his strength to resolve the problems of education and flood. In Ji Zhou, he had employed Wang Shunan,Fan Dangshi, He Tao for Xin Du School and he had obtained public praise in the local area. After in charge of Lian Chi School, he had contacted with all people extensively, promoting his western learning. Later, he had carried on the specific western education practice through founding Oriental and western literary schools, attempting to realize his dream of saving china. The third chapter mainly analysis the social context in the process of Wu Rulun theory's westernize.The failure of Sino-Japanese war made people realize that "western art" before learning was physical, and Chinese should study some metaphysics aspects, just as "west administration" and so on. Then, a new trend of learning western knowledge had been launched.Wu rulun and Yan fu had contacted closely, Yan fu had adopted Wu Rulun's many suggestions in translation process of western academic works. Wu Rulun had played important roles in the process of western localization. During the Qing Dynasty New Deal, he had investigated the Japanese educational system as chief teacher of the Imperial University of Peking. Through on-the-spot visiting and exchanging, Wu Rulun had understand the spirit of Japanese education, hoping that China can learn the western way of making country prosperous, assisted by the spirit of Chinese ancient sages. Wu Rulun had experienced several important events involved in the transformation of modern Chinese culture. he has his unique native perspective in interpreting western academy.In the history of western localization, Wu Rulun was an open-minded person among the traditional intellectuals.
