The clutching word is a characteristic language phenomenon of Chinese language. The grammar of the clutching word is so complicated that it becomes a difficult part for scholar to teach and to learn the Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. In recent years, although many experts and scholars have analyzed and studied all the aspects of clutching word, it is not enough to study it just based on textbook. So a exquisite Chinese teaching material for foreigner—"Bridge"is selected to be studied in this thesis. All the clutching words in the main-text and the vice-text of"Bridge"are the object of study. In addition, the"Contemporary Usage of Clutching Words Dictionary"written by Yang Qinghui is chosen as the standard for the thesis. In this thesis, I state the definition, character, usage and the biased error of clutching words. What's more, I analyzed the detail of each clutching word in"Bridge"aiming at helping Chinese learner who is in vantage level to study clutch words in a right way. This thesis consists of two parts—main text and appendix. In the main part, I focus on introducing the study history of clutching words and the current situation of it. At the same time, I summarize the different standpoints about it. So far, there is not an all-accepted definition of clutching words, so the practical use of it in teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language is the most important part of this thesis, rather than the theory of clutching words. Then, I deeply discuss the type of the clutching words, its character and the misunderstanding about it, which becomes the support theory of the appendix. The appendix includes two parts. Appendix One is a form of all the clutching words in"Bridge", and the form is about the 13 aspects of"split"in clutching words grammar. Appendix Two is on the analysis about the usage of all the clutching words in"Bridge", and I start the statement from two sides– splitting and combining."Splitting"is based on the 13 separate patterns in Appendix One."Combining"is referred to the 10 examples given by the"Contemporary Usage of Clutching Words Dictionary"written by Yang Qinghui. We should do more study about the theory of clutching words, and from the perspective of applied linguistics, it also can be a good attempt to study it as one aspect in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. Hopefully, the thesis can help a lot in this kind of study.
