ObjectiveBased on the evaluation mode of the competence from home and abroad and thecharacteristics of the nursing profession, this research project proposes an assessment methodused at PBL teaching for evaluating the competency of nursing undergraduates for informationmanagement. This study will perform comprehensive evaluation of students' informationmanagement competence of the status quo by measuring undergraduate students, and provideadvices and recommendations for undergraduate teaching reform.Methods1.Through literature research method รจ conduct theoretical study on evaluating thecompetence of nursing undergraduates for information management in PBL teaching, andanalyze and clearly define the theoretical basis and foundation of this study.2.Based on experts' opinions, an evaluation index system is established through theapplication of the Delphi method. This index system can be used to evaluate the competence ofnursing undergraduates for information management at PBL teaching. Teacher evaluation formand student self-assessment form are developed according to the established index system.3.Combined with PBL (problem based learning) teaching model, evaluate the informationmanagement competence of280nursing students from different education systems, and drawconclusions on students' competence.4.Analyze the evaluation results using Excel2003and statistical analysis softwareSPSS13.0, and complete the follows:(1) Calculating questionnaire reliability and validity.(2) Normality test of the assessment result.(3) Statistical description of evaluation results.(4) Independent samples t test of the evaluation results of the nursing students fromdifferent education systems.(5) The consistency test of results from self-assessment and assessments performed byothers.(6) Matching t test of results of the self-assessment conducted before and after PBLteaching by the50selected students.5.Interview students who participate in the evaluation, and understand their cognitive needsand needs for continuously learning of information management competence.Results1.Developed a competence index system for teacher's evaluation and studentself-assessment of information management competence of nursing undergraduates for PBL teaching. Indicators use Likert-type scale5point scoring system (5being the most important,4being important,3being general importance,2being not important,1being the least important).According to the screening criteria, namely index mean of individual indicators>3.5, the totalrecognition rate (percentage of the experts who give5points and4points)>80%, coefficient ofvariation <0.25, and the indicators are screened and revised based on expert's opinions. Based onthe established index system, teacher's evaluation form and student self-assessment form ofinformation management competence of nursing undergraduates were developed.2.The overall reliability of teacher evaluation form is0.794. Overall reliability of studentself-assessment form is0.915. That indicated that the assessment results are reliable.3.Evaluation results obey a normal distribution. Variance analysis showed that the scoredifference between the students from different school systems was statistically significant.Individual assessment results and self-assessment results are correlated (P <0.01).4.Self-assessment results of the information management capacity of nursing studentsbefore and after the PBL interaction on the time factor is significant. The difference isstatistically significant (P <0.01), which suggested the influential role of the PBL teaching fornursing undergraduate information management competence.5.The interview results showed that the way of evaluating the information managementcapacity of nursing undergraduate in PBL teaching got the recognition of the students. Students'recognition provides some supports for the evaluation results.Conclusions1.Content of the index system for teacher's evaluation and student self-assessment of thecompetence of nursing undergraduates for information management at PBL teaching, is verycomprehensive. The index system can be used as reference and basis for follow-up study.2.Research results of this study suggested that the proposed assessment method used at PBLteaching for evaluating the competency of nursing undergraduates for information management,is reliable. The evaluation results reflect nursing undergraduate students' actual competence.3.The distribution of the average of the280nursing students' assessment andself-assessment score indicated that the information management capabilities of nursing studentsare at the middle level. There is still much room for improvement.4.By analyzing and summarizing the survey results and interview results, this studyprovides advices and recommendations for further improving the educational program fornursing undergraduate.
