Objective: To study serum testosterone levels, and reveal their relationship with negative symptoms in chronic schizophrenia male patients, and in the same way to investigate relationship negative symptoms and the 2D: 4D ratio variability.Method: (1) 20 schizophrenia patients (experimental group) were selected who were treating in Dalian GUOLI mental hospital during the Jun.2010 to Feb. 2011, and other 20 normal men were selected as the control group. Serum testosterone level are measured with electric chemical luminescent method in the two groups; (2) Length of the left hand'index finger (2D) to ring finger (4D) are also measured, and the 2D:4D ratios are calculated; (3) PANSS scale was used to evaluate severity of negative symptoms for 20 Schizophrenia patients in the experimental group. The correlations were analyzed between the testosterone concentration and the negative symptom, 2D:4D.Results: (1) Compared with the control group, serum testosterone levels in the experimental group were significantly lower [(16.58±3.81)vs(19.59±4.23),t=-2.364,p=0.023];(2) 2D:4D ratio was also lower in the experimental group [(0.97±0.04)vs(0.99±0.01),t=-2.183,p=0.035]; (3) The patient's negative symptom was negatively correlated with testosterone concentration r=-0.516,P=0.020), while there was no significant association between the negative symptoms and the ratio of 2D: 4D (r=-0.038,P=0.874).Conclusion:Male chronic schizophrenia patients have lowered serum testosterone concentration, suggesting that hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad axis disorder exist in the schizophrenia patients. Serum testosterone concentration negative correlated with the severity of negative symptoms, the testosterone may be as a drug to treat the schizophrenia patients.
