Professor Wen Zhenying is a chief physician in Pediatrics Department, Affiliated Beijing Chinese Medicine Hospital of Capital Medical University. She is an national-level famous old expert of traditional Chinese medicine, enjoying special government allowances of the State Council, and she is the national third-batch and fourth-batch guidance teacher of academic experience inheritance of old experts in traditional Chinese medicine. In the fifty years of her medicine career, she accumulates plentiful clinical experiences. She not only is good at the treatment of allergic diseases, spleen and stomach diseases, cough and asthma diseases, functional fever, etc in infantile internal medicine, but also has her own unique views on prevention and treatment of infantile dermatosis, adult irregular menstruation and cancer. For clinical medication, she is good at selecting a "Versatile" drug and develops a series of prescriptions, such as Nourishing Yin and Replenishing Qi mixture, strengthening spleen and replenishing Qi mixture and strengthening spleen and improving appetite mixture so on.The purpose of this study was to explore the academic background of Professor Wen from different perspectives and to show her academic thoughts from different aspects, and hence outline overview of academic thoughts and clinical experiences of Wen professor. Also, it was to deeply find the unique academic opinions and treatment rules of famous old experts in traditional Chinese medicine in order to provide a theoretical basis for further promotion application and development innovation traditional Chinese medicine. The main contents of this paper were divided into three parts:1 Academic origin of Wen Zhenying, old expert of traditional Chinese medicine: Professor Wen graduated from the famous western medicine university and had plentiful western medicine knowledge. Afterward, she participated in the traditional Chinese medicine learning of Beijing First Western Medicine Quit Learning Class and systematically learned the basic theory of traditional Chinese medicine. She began to widely contact ancient Chinese medical classics and was good at discarding the dross and selecting the essence to absorb the essences of various thoughts. At the same time, Professor Wen obtained true learns from various famous experts. After she worked in Beijing Chinese Medicine Hospital, she also met various famous old experts of traditional Chinese medicine, such as Qi Zhenhua, Yang Yinong, Zhou Muxin, Yao Zhengping, Xi Peiling, Guan Youbo, Wang Pengfei etc. She caught every opportunity to learn from famous old experts of traditional Chinese medicine within the department and in other department and other hospital by copying prescriptions, consultation, learning outside etc. and absorbed the advantages of various experts, which significantly enhanced her clinical practice ability of traditional Chinese medicine. She still wrote continuously, writing more than 200 papers and more than 10 books of monographs. On the base of summarizing literatures and previous experiences, she formed her own unique academic thoughts and diagnosis and treatment experiences. Among them, the most representative works included "Wen Zhenying' s Medicine Test Case Selection", "My Heritage Road for Traditional Chinese Medicine", "Wen Zhenying's Remarks on Overall Medicine and Syndrome Differentiation", etc.2 Summary of academic thoughts and clinical experiences of Wen Zhenying, old expert of traditional Chinese medicine:Academic thoughts of Professor Wen and etiologies and pathogeneses, syndrome differentiation, prescriptions of allergic diseases, spleen and stomach disease, cough, functional fever and other diseases which she was good at were analyzed, induced and summarized in detail by arranging cases treated by her, reading her papers works and previous research reports, following her to diagnose, listening to her clinical analysis on cases and her clinical treatment experiences, participating in her teaching, clinical rounds and lectures. In addition, her experiences of treating dermatosis such as infantile allergic rash, eczema, etc. and adult irregular menstruation and cancer were summarized.2.1Her main academic thoughts were induced as the following characteristics:2.1.1 The overall concept of traditional Chinese medicine was highlighted, and the disease essence was caught.Professor Wen began with the overall concept. She not only concerned the current syndrome, but also comprehensively observed and analyzed syndrome-related other syndromes and hidden diseases during syndrome differentiation. During diagnosis and treatment, she caught the disease essence and appropriately considered other syndromes while considering to removing the main symptom. She thought that the true medical model was a model related to society, environment, body and mind. In clinical practice, she very highlighted the overall concept of traditional medicine and strived for that "Treatment must catch the disease essence". The overall concept of Professor Wen played a very important role plaid in clinical practice.2.1.2 It was advocated to support the healthy energy and expect the balance. Supporting the Healthy Energy and concerning the balance was the another important academic thought of Professor Wen treating diseases. Professor Wen thought disease treatment and syndrome differentiation should protect vital Qi. For long diseases and deficiency symptoms, supporting the healthy energy was necessary. For neopathy and actual syndrome, especially for some severe diseases, Professor Wen also paid attention to protect vital Qi at any time, as Professor Wen thought that reason of disease incidence lay in that vital Qi was the principal aspect of a contradiction. When evil Qi was lack and diseases occurred, vital Qi excluded evil Qi to make body generate effective strength for rehabilitation. Professor Wen thought that occurrence and development of disease were essentially the competition process of pathogenic factor and normal factor, and prognosis and development of disease depended on changes of pathogenic factor and normal factor. Therefore, supporting the healthy energy method was used for treatment in order to activate potential disease resistance factors.2.1.3 The acquired essence of spleen and stomach was concerned. As diagnosing and treating infantile diseases in clinic, Professor Wen especially highlighted the importance of spleen and stomach. In treatment, she concerned the protection and regulation of spleen and stomach at any time. Also, she thought that the idea of concerning spleen and stomach not only should reflect in diagnosis and treatment of infantile spleen and stomach syndrome, but also should reflect in diagnosis and treatment processes of other infantile various diseases. Therefore, diagnosing and treating various diseases by centering spleen and stomach in clinic would obtain unexpected effectiveness.2.1.4 It was advocated that the four diagnostic methods were used jointly, and observation diagnosis was concerned especially. As Professor Wen highlighted the overall concept of traditional Chinese medicine, diagnosis and treatment also highlighted the overall syndrome differentiation. For achieving the purpose, it was necessary to use the four methods:observation, smell, asking and feeling. Professor Wen thought that observation, smell, asking and feeling were the four methods of diagnosing diseases in traditional Chinese medicine, and they respectively had their own effects. They should be combined completely, and any one couldn't be neglected. Among the four methods, Professor Wen especially concerned observation, as observation diagnosis could obviously provide the most objective and reliable information. In his early years, Professor Wen firstly carried out study of childhood constitution identification mainly based on tongue demonstration diagnosis. Now, she carries out observation researches of faces, tongue demonstrations and Skin stains of patients with allergic constitution. For observation, Professor Wen not only concerned the overall observation, but also considered the local observation. For the overall observation diagnosis, Professor Wen concerned expression and body form. For local observation diagnosis, she only concerned faces and tongue demonstrations.2.2 Her main clinical experiences were induced as the following characteristics:2.2.1 She kept up the times and was good at treating allergic diseasesProfessor Wen thought external reasons of allergic diseases were associated with wind-evil. This kind of external wind included atmosphere wind and inhaled allergens. In traditional Chinese medicine, the constitution of patients with allergic diseases constitution was of Yin deficiency, and Yin deficiency caused endogenous liver wind. Therefore, Professor Wen thought that Internal and external wind evil was the main pathogenesis and etiology of allergic disease. Dispelling Wind for Relieving Itching, Nourishing Yin and Replenishing Qi, Strengthening Spleen and Replenishing Lung were main treatment methods.2.2.2 Experiences of treating common spleen and stomach diseases such as infantile diarrhea, constipation, apositia, etc.2.2.2.1 When Professor Wen treated infantile diarrhea, she never forgot infantile physiological characteristics:"Spleen deficiency" and "Infantile Yixuyishi". Therefore, her medications were mild and versatile. The characteristics of treating infantile diarrhea were to treat the disease essence by strengthening spleen and eliminating dampness and to treat disease phenomenon by regenerating body liquid and inducing astringency.2.2.2.2 For infantile constipation, she must ask the primary disease. If fever or miscellaneous diseases complication caused constipation, drugs were mainly selected according to the syndrome differentiation of main disease. If constipation was the main symptom, there was no other pain, and intestinal tract had no congenital malformation, the patient was asked to adjust diets and carry out a reasonable feeding. It was forbid to use purgative. In clinical practice, Professor Wen usually divided the primary disease into two types of syndrome: spleen Qi deficiency type and Yin deficiency and intestinal body liquid deficiency type, and respectively treated them with self-made prescriptions.2.2.2.3 For infantile apositia, Professor Wen though that the basic pathogenesis lay in dysfunction of spleen in transportation. So, the key of treatment was to reinforcing spleen and stomach. Professor Wen divided it into three types of syndrome differentiation:spleen and stomach Qi deficiency, spleen and stomach Yin deficiency and spleen deficiency and stagnation.2.2.3 Differentiate symptoms and signs for identifying coughsProfessor Wen thought that various reasons would cause cough, including respiratory tract infection and tracheal disease and lung disease. For clinical common coughs, besides exogenous cough and cough with internal injury, cough caused by postnasal drip and allergic cough should be concerned. In addition, coughs caused by side effects of drugs and drug allergy should be also attended.2.2.4 Diagnosis and treatment experiences for functional feverIn clinical outpatient service of traditional Chinese medicine, functional fever was the most usually misdiagnosed. Comparison of the characteristics of functional fever summarized by Professor Wen with those of infective fever provided a reference idea for posterity differentiating fever syndrome. In addition, Professor Wen divided functional fever into infected fever syndrome and summer fever. It was thought that in cases of autonomic nervous dysfunction or infected fever syndrome, it was necessary to carry out overall syndrome differentiation by combining Tian (season, climate), Di (the geographical environment) and Ren (social conditions) according to the etiology, pathogenesis, clinical course and constitution of the patient. Professor Wen highlighted that this kind of patients presented deficiency signs. Therefore, Supporting the Healthy Energy method was used for diagnosis and treatment. It wasn't necessary to clear heat, but the heat disappeared naturally. For constitutional fever, it wasn't necessary to carry out medication, and heat could naturally disappear by diets and living regulations.2.2.5 Diagnosis and treatment experiences for infantile eczemaProfessor Wen thought that for acute eczema, it was best to select drugs for external application mainly to treat skin damage and select peroral drugs mainly to eliminate dampness and clear heat. For chronic eczema, treatment centered around internal regulation, especially enriching blood and moistening dryness. Prescriptions for internal regulation should combine the pathogenesis of modern medicine. If allergy was the etiology, anti-allergic herbs should be selected. In case of skin lesions with epidermal hyperplasia and rough hypertrophy, herbs with effect of removing blood stasis and dispersing symptoms and effect of softening tissues should be added. In clinical application, Professor Wen divided it into the four types of syndromes, dampness and heat flourishing, spleen deficiency and dampness flourishing, blood heat and wind flourishing and blood deficiency and wind dryness for treatment.2.2.6 Diagnosis and treatment experiences for adult irregular menstruationProfessor Wen thought that irregular menstruation was only the disease phenomenon, and its reasons included many aspects, such as prosperity and decl ine and balance of Qi and blood, Coordination of five viscera. They all influenced normal operation of menstruation, and it wasn't realistic that only kidney influenced menstruation. As Professor Wen treated irregular menstruation, it not only carried out syndrome differentiation, but also looked for reasons and explored the essence for conducting overall treatment by coordinating Qi and blood of five viscera.2.2.7 Prevention and treatment experiences of cancerProfessor Wen thought that only aberrant differentiation and hyperplasia of Normal human cells was the fundamental cause resulting in cancers. While aberrant differentiation was regulated by proto-oncogene and anti-oncogene in human body and autoimmune system. Therefore, it was necessary to improve the immune function of human body. It was the best prevention and treatment method of cancer to carry out syndrome differentiation of different types of cancers by means of supporting the healthy energy method of traditional Chinese medicine.2.2.8 Prescription making and drug administration reached "Perfect prescription and versatile drug", and she concerned modern pharmacological researchFor Clinical medication, Professor Wen strongly advocated to apply simple and small amount of drugs and highlighted that "versatile effect" was the specialty and advantage of traditional Chinese herbs. It should be cautious to apply bitter and cold drugs damaging spleen and hindering stomach and drugs with toxicity damaging kidney function. Clinical medication of Professor Wen not only followed theory of traditional Chinese medicine, but also combined modern pharmacological research results, with obvious characteristics.2.2.9 Main prescriptions prepared by Professor WenMain prescriptions prepared by Professor Wen included Nourishing Yin and Replenishing Qi mixture, Strengthening spleen and replenishing Qi mixture and Strengthening Spleen, Improving Appetite mixture, etc. They won numerous awards and were widely popular for the majority of patients in clinical application.3 Study on medication laws of Wen Zhenying old expert of Chinese medicine diagnosing and treating infantile diarrhea:Literature section reviewed the clinical research overviews of Chinese medicine and western medicine on infantile diarrhea in the past 5 years. The purpose of clinical research report section was to investigate the medication laws and academic experiences of Professor Wen treating infantile diarrhea. The study collected 155 effective and self-made prescriptions of Professor Wen diagnosing and treating 60 cases with infantile diarrhea complying with the research standard and neatened and analyzed the use frequency of drug and use frequency of drug type for capturing her medication laws and academic experiences. Results:reinforcing drugs, eliminating dampness drugs and astringent drugs were the basic component drugs of Self-made prescription of Professor Wen treating infantile diarrhea. Conclusion:Strengthening spleen and eliminating dampness and stopping diarrhea with astringents were the basic medication laws of Professor Wen treating infantile diarrhea. In this article, two parts are included. One is literature review, and the other is clinical study report.Part of the literature review, it has an overview on the medicine clinical and research profile about diarrhea in children by Chinese and Western medicine within past 5 years. In the article, there are profiles of progress in Western medicine treatment of this disease in recent years, and with the Chinese disease name in the title for this disease, and modern Chinese scholars of the etiology and pathogenesis of this disease, syndrome type and within the external treatment of TCM research profile.Part of Clinical study, it designed to investigate our old Chinese medicine expert, Wen Zhenying's laws of medication and academic experience on the treatment to the children with diarrhea.
