ObjectiveThe objects of this study are to improve reproductive health of college student in an arts college and explore a proper intervention mode for such population. We also evaluated the effect of interventions on contraceptive cognitions, sexual concepts, sexual attitudes and sexual behaviors occurring. This study provides evidences for how to conduct reproductive health intervention in art college students in the future.MethodsBy using multistage sampling method, we selected 4 to 5 classes from 1st to 3rd grade in an art college. All of the students in the classes were investigated for the reproductive health related knowledge, attitude and behavior by self-reported questionnaires in these classes. Then we conducted a reproductive health intervention to them for three to six months including reproductive health lectures and internet way. After intervention, same investigations were performed in same way to baseline. Then we compared the effect indicators before and after the intervention and evaluated the effect of reproductive health intervention.ResultsContraceptive knowledge of art college students was relatively low in the baseline. Only 0.6% and 1.5% person could give the correct answers to questions about"the side effects of oral contraceptives"and"correct emergency contraception method". There were 19% of males student had sex behavior, obviously higher than female student did (6.9%). There were 73.9% of students know that school conducted reproductive health lectures, females reported more than males did. Only 29.4% of participates thought the lectures satisfied their demands of reproductive health knowledge. The proportion of browse contraceptive website was 10.6%, boys did more than girls did. Among them, 86.4% of the visitors browsed only when they needed help. After the intervention, college students'reproductive health knowledge, attitude scores were improved, but the contraceptive knowledge remained below 3%. The students have sex behavior in the past half a year were decreased obviously. Males choose taking abortion after their sexual partners were pregnant were increased obviously. Three main ways of Art college students get contraceptives were pharmacy store, supermarkets and auto selling machine. For reasons of the students didn't use contraceptives, 40.1% of students think they will not be pregnant if they have sex behavior occasionally. In addition, males thought contraceptive was inconvenient while girls worried about side effects of the contraceptives. The main way of college students acquired knowledge was mass media. And the ways they wished to get the reproductive health knowledge included the course beside the mass media. The most hoped reproductive health education mode was the lectures. 60.6% of the students thought it is better to have the reproductive health class when they were a freshman.ConclusionThe art college students' contraceptive knowledge deficient, they urgently needed contraceptive education. The effect of interventions on college student has improved their reproductive health knowledge, attitude and more safe sex behavior. The reproductive health intervention lectures are effective for art college students. However, the majority of students believe this lecture still did not meet their demands of contraceptive knowledge, and they hoped more such lectures. Therefore, college students need more long-term reproductive health interventions.
