Objectives:To observe the clinical efficiency of nourishing the liver and kidney on primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS) patients and its influence on sexual hormone in postmenopausal female pSS patients. Methods:Totally 40 postmenopausal female pSS patients with syndrome of Yin deficiencies of the liver and kidney were randomly divided into two groups, a treating group with 20 cases and a control group with 20 cases. The control group was administered hydroxychloroquine(HCQ) sulfate tablet. In addition, the treating group was prescribed chinese medicine of nourishing the liver and kidney. Three-month treatment was as one course. After one treatment course, the clinical efficiency, the changes in symptom scores, tear quantity, salivation quantity, immuno-infective indices and the level of sexual hormone were observed to compare between both groups. Meanwhile, the relationship between the changes of the level of sexual hormone and the clinical efficiency was observed to analyse. Results:The total effective rate of the treating group (85%) was significantly higher than that (55%) of the control group (P<0.05).The scores of clinical symptoms, tear quantity and salivation quantity of both groups were significantly improved(P<0.05), while the improvement in the treating group was more obvious than that in the control group (P<0.05). In both groups, immunoglobulin G (IgG), immunoglobulin A (IgA), immunoglobulin M (IgM),erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and the C reactive protein (CRP), were significantly improved than those before treatment (P<0.05), but no significant difrerences were found of two groups after treatment (P>0.05). In the treating group, estradiol(E2), testosterone(T), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) were significantly improved than those before treatment (P<0.05), while the improvement of testosterone and DHEAS was more obvious than that in the control group (P<0.05). No obvious changes could be found of sexual hormone in the control group (P>0.05). The changes of the level of E2, T and DHEAS per and post treatment were positively correlated with the clinical efficiency(r=0.595, P<0.05; r=0.911, P<0.05; r=0.799, P<0.05).Conclusion:The combination of chinese medicine of nourishing the liver and kidney and HCQ is more effective on pSS than single use of HCQ. and is able to improve disorderd sexual honnone level for postmenopausal female pSS patients.
