BackgroundAgricultural injury is an important occupational hazard. Because of its high death rates and high disability rates, agriculture is regarded as one of the most dangerous occupations in the world. An American National Security Council report found that, in 2007, the agricultural injury caused 700 dead and 80,000 disabled. The cost of agricultural injury treatment and rehabilitation and the production loss because of agricultural injury was about 10 billion dollars every year in the USA. China is a big agricultural country, with 57% of the population living in the rural area. A survey in Hubei province found that 33% of the farmers reported at least one agricultural work related injury during the past two years before the survey. But until now, there is no systematically analysis about the agricultural injury information in China. The research status of agricultural injury in China is not clear.ObjectiveSystematically collect and analyze the current agricultural injury resources in China in order to provide basis and suggestions on the future research of the agricultural injury in China.MethodFour research methods were used in this study:documentation researching method, focus group discussion, personal interview, bibliometric analysis.Results1. We found 89 literatures and 4 national data resources according the definition above.92.1% of the 89 literatures were published during the year of 2003 to 2010; 6 of them were about the injury occurred during the process of agricultural production, and the others were about the injury happened in the rural area. The 4 national resources were National Disease Surveillance Points System (DSPs), National Retrospective Sampling Survey of Death Causes, China Health Statistics Annuals, Chinese National Injury Surveillance System. 2. The author and organization cooperation rate is 85.4% and 42.7%; 85.18% of the first authors are from the CDC or universities/colleges, there is no core author group in the field of agricultural injury. The provinces which published the most papers are Zhejiang, Shandong and Guangdong. A total of 603 references were quoted in the 89 papers, and the average Price Index is 56.38%; 88.56% of the references are periodical literature, and 66.5% are in the Chinese language.3. Proposing an uniform definition of agricultural injury in China is the research priority in the future study of agricultural injury in China.Conclusion:1. The data resources of agricultural injury are mainly founded in the health department. The main forms are literature and national data resources.2. The research of agricultural injury in China is in the initial step. There is no a clear definition of agricultural injury in China by now. So, in the first place, we should solve the problem of definition.4. The problem of agricultural injury does not attract enough attention in China now. We suggest that there is a need of deeper investigation and data mining on the basis of the uniform definition of agricultural injury.
