Objective:In China, the folable intraocular lens is being developed.This study is to observe the biocompatibility in rabbit eyes of a new hydrophilic acrylic soft lens made by Tianjin TEDA biological company, a company of IOLs manufactory.Methods:1. Thirty-eight rabbits were divided into four groups. Group 1 was implanted with test IOLs in one eye and control IOLs (a type of imported hydrophilic acrylic IOL) in counterlateral eye after phacoemulsification in 20 rabbits. Group 2 was of test IOLs in one eye and no implantation in counterlateral eye in 8 rabbits. Group 3 was of control IOLs in one eye and no implantation in counterlateral eye in 8 rabbits. Group 4 was normal control. In all, we implanted 28 test hydrophilic acrylic IOLs and control IOLs repectively in rabits' eyes after phacoemulsification.2. All of The eyes were examined by slitlamp microscope.ophthalmoscopes and Tonometer under surface anesthesia at postoperative3,7,15,30,90,180,360 days.At different periods postoperatively aqueous from anterior chamber was aspirated to calculate cells and measure 1L-1βand TNF-a by ELISA.The eyeballs and IOLs were . excised at 30,90,180,360 days postoperatively to make the IOLs scanning electronic microscopy,tissue pathology and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.Results:1. Corneal edema:At 3 day postoperatively corneal edema was very obvious, and relieved gradually and disappeared.There was no significant difference between the control and the test groups.2. Anterior chamber exudation:At 7 day postoperatively anterior chamber exudation became prominent, which was decreased gradually and absorbed till 30 day postoperatively. There was no significant difference between the control and the experimental groups.3. Posterior capsule opacification (PCO):It occurred at 15 days and was obvious at 90 day. There was no significant difference at 90,180,360 day between the control and the experimental groups. 4. Complications:There were IOLs luxation into anterior chamber, pupil capture, iris neovascularization,hyphema, bullous keratopathy. These complications were associated with operation.5. Cells in the aqueous:Cellular count was highest at 7 day and recovered at 30 day. At 7 day cells of the experimental group were little more than that of control groups, but there was no significant difference at any time between the control and the experimental groups.6.1L-1βand TNF-a:The level of 1L-1βand TNF-a in aqueous reached the highest level at 7 day and recovered at 30 day. At 7,15 day the level of 1L-1βand TNF-a of experimental group were little more than that of control groups, but There was no significant difference at any time between the control and the experimental groups.7. Cellular adhesion on the IOLs surface:Cellular adhesion was less on the IOLs center and more on the IOLs border by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) at 30, 90.180.360 day postoperatively.The most deposited cells on IOLs were macrophages. There were a few proteineous membrane and macrophages gathered on the surface of IOLs at 30 day postoperatively. At 90 day postoperatively. the proteineous membrane reduces and the macrophages scattered. At 180,360 day postoperatively there was fibrinous proteineous membrane on the surface of IOLs.There were no significant differences between the two hydrophilic IOLs.8. Pathology:Under microscopy of anterior segment tissue there were no significant differences between two groups, less synechiae was founded at anterior chamber angle and no edema in cornea. The iris and ciliary body showed no injection and synechiae.At180,360 day postoperatively the pathological changes of acute reactions had disappeared.The types of morphological changes of PCO included fibrosis, pearl and Soemmerring's ring, which was more and more obvious as time.9. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy:At 180 day postoperatively contain calcium and phosphorus elements on the surface of IOLs, which had no significant absorption, There was no significant difference between the control and the experimental groups.Conclusios:We observed the long-time effect of the IOLs implantation in rabbit eyes.The biocompatibility is mimic in the test and control hydrophliclic acrylic IOLs.
