To explore the ability of indoor foliage plants on purification of formaldehyde pollution inthe air, we selected six indoor foliage plants: Chlorophytum comosum, Hedera nepalensisvar.sinensis, Scindapsus aureum, Aglaonema modestum, Schefflera octophylla and Neottopterisnidus. Firstly studied the leaves separated from plants have the ability of absorption onformaldehyde solution or not, besed on it studied the ability of Whole plants and theaboveground parts of plant on purification of formaldehyde, and discussed on the light effects onthe absorption effect of formaldehyde, finally analysised on the strength of their resistance toformaldehyde pollution based on the changes of their physiological indexes, at last determinedthe integrated ability of Indoor foliage plants on purification of formaldehyde pollution. Relatedconclusions are as follows:(1) In concentration of formaldehyde, respectively as4mmol/L,6mmol/L,8mmol/L environment, vitro leaves of six kinds of foliage plants have demonstrated the ability on absorption of formaldehyde, and absorption also varied with different species of plant. In three formaldehyde concentration, the maximum values of six kinds of plants on absorption of formaldehyde are respectively: Chlorophytum comosum(0.12mg/cm~2), Hedera nepalensis var.sinensis(0.102mg/cm~2), Scindapsus aureum(0.094mg/cm~2), Aglaonema modestum(0.065mg/cm~2), Schefflera octophylla(0.056mg/cm~2), Neottopteris nidus(0.038mg/cm~2). Sorted by the absorption values of formaldehyde:Chlorophytum comosum>Hedera nepalensis var.sinensis>Scindapsus aureum>Aglaonema modestum>Schefflera octophylla>Neottopteris nidus.(2) With elevated concentrations of formaldehyde, the rate of the absorption on formaldehyde of most of the plants has declined, the absorption rate of low concentrations of formaldehyde concentration are higher than the other two conditions, but from the absorption values, with elevated concentrations of formaldehyde, the absorption of formaldehyde of most of the plants have gradually increased.(3) Isolated from soil-root, the absorption on formaldehyde of the aboveground parts of plant significantly lower than the entire plant. Indicates that soil-root had absorbed (adsorped) part ofthe formaldehyde.(4) After treatment of Formaldehyde, chlorophyll of six kinds of indoor foliage plants decreaced, accumulation of MDA increased, permeability of cell membrane increased, activity of SODincreased.Chlorophytum comosum has the best bility on absorption of formaldehyde, but its resistanceis weakest.Scindapsus aureum has the best bility on resistance to formaldehyde pollution.
