In recent years, with the improvement of people,s living standard, more and morepeople pay attention to improving the indoor air quality. Formaldehyde has become one ofcommon toxic indoor pollutants in China today, which bring worse influence on people.Indoor harmful gases can be removed by plants, although the abilities of different species ofplants in removing harmful gases and their tolerances to those harmful gases are verydifferent. The author chose4species of indoor ornamental plants. Pot and soil were separatedfrom the haulm and put into a self-designed fumigating box to conduct formaldehydeexperiment. Training for people in the future high resistance to high formaldehyde plants andselection of formaldehyde absorption indicator plant has important theoreticaland practical significance. Main results are as follow:1. All the4indoor species had abilities to absorb formaldehyde pollutant, and theremoval capacities of different plants were different, Comparing the value of the unit ofleave-area absorbing formaldehyde, which ranked from high to low according to the removalcapacities: Plectranthus tomentosa>Peperomia tetraphylla>Aspargus plumosus. Tradescantiazebrine was particularly sensitive to formaldehyde, which could be used for monitoringformaldehyde.2. According to the formaldehyde plant under stress grading hurt, the experimentexplained4kinds of potted ornamental plants ability of anti-formaldehyde. Resistance by thestrong to weak were as follows: Peperomia tetraphylla> Plectranthus tomentosa>Aspargusplumosus>Tradescantia3. Under different level of formaldehyde in the stress,4kinds of potted ornamentalplants had great differences. Formaldehyde treatment to the4kinds of potted ornamentalplants had an impact on the relative conductivity and MDA content. The relativeconductivity and MDA content of the4kinds of potted ornamental plants increased with theincrease of formaldehyde stress. During formaldehyde pre-stress, SOD activity and solubleprotein content of the three plants rose with the increase of formaldehyde concentration. PODactivity of Scindapsus aureum was first increased and then decreased trend andincreased with the increase of the concentration of formaldehyde.4. Removing formaldehyde capacities of the4kinds of potted ornamental plants weresignificantly higher in summer than that in winter. 5. The plant’s capacity to absorb formaldehyde was also influenced by strength ofillumination. The ability of3indoor species to absorb formaldehyde increased with the lightintensity, But if the light intensity enhanced, the plant’s capacity to absorb formaldehydedecreased. In general,3kinds of plants absorb formaldehyde plant ability increased and thendecreased with the light intensity.
