Along with the rapid urbanization process in China, more and more single-function urban areas and residential zones are created, and there is an increasingly significant tendency of separation and isolation among residents of different classes in the urban residential spaces. After decades of development and practices, the theory of mixed residential development is playing an increasingly important role in the planning and design of modern residential communities. It is against such a background and based on the summary of existing theories and relevant practices concerning the mixed urban residential development, this paper analyzes a large number of residential zones in China that are built in light of the functional zoning theory, identifies the problems thereof, analyzes the necessity of mixed urban residential development and puts forward planning and design solutions accordingly. This paper comprises of six chapters:Chapter 1 starts with the background and significance of this research, specifies the research subject, scope, methodology and framework in this paper, and defines the scope of the research subject, i.e. the mixed urban residential zones.Chapter 2 summarizes and reviews relevant theories, researches and practices concerning the development of mixed urban residential zones at home and abroad, thus builds a theoretical platform for this research.Chapter 3, in view of different types of residential zones in China and from various perspectives, identifies relevant problems with existing residential zones in China, analyzes the strengths and characteristics of mixed urban residential zones, and demonstrates the necessity and trend of mixed urban residential zone development.Chapter 4, in view of the characteristics of mixed urban residential development and based on the relevant planning and design principles and objectives, provides corresponding planning and design strategies from the perspectives of functional mixing, class mixing/balancing, road traffic organization and space design of residential zones.Chapter 5, by analyzing representative cases and practices of planning and design for mixed uaban residential zones in China, demonstrates the application of planning and design strategies in practices. The Conclusion summarizes the main view points in this paper and provides an outlook of subsequent researches.
