In recent years,with the improvement of the integrated circuit design technical and technological level, the CMOS image sensors get rapid development. At present it and CCD image sensor has a similar performance in signal to noise ratio, light sensitivity, dynamic range and so on. But the CCD devices do not have the special advantages of the CMOS image sensors. They have low power consumption, high integration and other characteristics. More importantly, speed is the inherent advantage of the CMOS image sensors. Therefore the CMOS image sensor has more and more important status in the field of the digital imaging, especially high-speed digital imaging.Smart camera is an embedded machine vision system using optical imaging. It identifies the feature of the target from the image. It controls the equipment according to the results of image processing actions. Its output is the analysis of the digital image, more than just a piece of digital images. Now high-speed digital imaging technology is mature. The research on high-speed smart image system has positive promoting significance and practical value.In this thesis the history and actuality of the CMOS imaging sensor and smart image system has been introduced. And the characteristic of LUPA1300-2, which is manufactured by Cypress, has been analyzed. The working theory and structure of a smart camera has been also explained. And the hardware and software foundations of realizing a smart camera have been analyzed. High-speed smart CMOS imaging system was built. The design was fitted into XC4VFX12FFG668, a FPGA produced by XILINX. The driving timing was described by Verilog HDL. The control of the sensor and pixel processing was implemented. Real-time non-uniformity correction for CMOS sensor was implemented to improve image quality in the output stage. The image was transferred through Camera Link interface. The image acquisition and display on PC was realized by using a special image acquisition chip with Camera Link interface. At the same time the PAL-D interface and VGA interface were designed in order to meet the application of different occasions.The experimental results showed that the system was reliable. It could control CMOS sensor flexibly. The picture was clear and stable. The system shot fast and could be applied to high-speed photography forums.
