With the development of power industry, using the dry-type air core reactors can date back to 1980s. As the dry air-core reactor have advantages of linearity and low loss, so it gradually replaced by the cement reactor. However, the operating experience of domestic and foreign has shown that Core reactor Winding insulation damaged was major failures during. Since this damage can cause turn-to-turn short-circuit, even burn-down of the reactor, it is necessary to develop a reliable testing method regarding to detection of turn-to-turn insulation flaws.Recently, there is not many domestic manufacturers able to detect inter-turn insulation, and it is very expensive to introduce the equipment from foreign. So it is necessary to design a precise turn to turn insulation test system according to the IEEE Std C57.21-2008 IEEE Standard Requirements, Terminology, and Test Code for Shunt Reactors Rated Over 500 kVA and IEEE Std C57.16-1996 Requirements, terminology, and test code for dry-type air-core series-connected reactors.The OrCAD software simulation system was operated and validated the method used to detect inter-turn insulation of dry air-core reactor by pulse oscillation is feasibility.Through calculation and analysis, main characters of the circuit can be determined. Given these characters, the testing system can detect whether turn-to-turn insulation had flaws or not by comparing the amplitude deceleration rate and the moments of voltage crossing zero. These detections are carried out under rated voltage and full oscillating voltage, separately. Finally, system simulation results reveal that the performance of the designed testing system is fully acceptable. That is to say, turn-to-turn insulation flaws of dry-type air core power reactor can be accurately found out.
