Through the analysis of the characteristics of large container vessels, present situation of berthing assistance equipment and features of wind an current in Ningbo port, this paper elaborates the reasons why large container vessels touch wharf cranes when get alongside; uses the geometric model to calculate the safe position of wharf cranes; analyses wind and current influence for the two typical container terminals at Ningbo Port, calculates the number of tugs necessary for safe berthing under different wind and current conditions by taking account of elements of ship's engine, rudder, anchor, thruster etc.; and summarizes corresponding ship maneuvering method for berthing of the large container vessels. The research result may provide reference to the berthing operation of the large container vessels at Ningbo Port and be useful to maximize the port production on the pre-condition of safety of both vessels and wharfs.
