Traffic congestion is the common problem that faced by each person living in the cities. With the popularity of cars, that problem becomes more and more serious. The traffic congestion problem is caused by one of the main reasons that the slow traffic at the district entrance and the charging entrance. Application of contactless vehicle identification system allows the car without stopping to pass through the entrance and the district entrance quickly. What's more, the application of that technique not only eases traffic congestion, but also achieves the registration to increase the security of living district and the toll road by checking and monitoring the vehicle passing through. In this paper, vehicle identification system is brought out based on long-range radio frequency identification (RFID) technology and general packet radio service (GPRS) wireless data transmission technology. Ensuring the car with some traffic speed, the system achives vehicle identification, registration and fees according to need by the technology of long-range radio frequency identification. And, it backs up the information of vehicle traffic conditions and user accounts are by way of GPRS wireless data transmission. It is really realized that automatic rapid passage, district entrance registration and electronic toll collection (ETC).This paper mainly demonstrates the realization plan of the vehicle identification system. The hardware system is designed based on the technology of RFID and GPRS. According to the practical application environment of the system, communications protocols related and software design are given to achieve the radio gate-guard system for vehicle identification. The system uses modular design; commissioning tests adopts the test method that first sub-module and then joint commissioning system; ultimately the contactless vehicle identification is realized. The vehicle information can be uploaded to the customer administration center system. And, the customer administration center system could updates data and status of the vehicle electronic tag by using the reader in the security room of the gate, which transfers the data by GPRS. The testing validates the availability of the anti-collision algorithms in radio communications and the validity of the design of the system.
