| The architectural complex of Dangjia village, locating in Hancheng City, Shaanxi province and built in Ming and Qing dynasties, is the ancient village with the largest scale and the best maintenance that ever found in Shaanxi province, being worth the name"the treasure houses". The gatehouses of these ancient buildings, which are the most refinedly decorated and of the top status, concentratively represent the cream of the architecture art of quadrangle. Verily, they can be called the pearls on the crown.Gatehouse is the face of Chinese ancient buildings, symbolizing the host's social standing and wealth. It is an epitome of ancient folk culture and a corroborator of spiritual pursuit, strongly expresses the ancient etiquette. The research on gatehouse is not only a protection and a promotion of the culture heritage, but also a useful traditional element that can be added to modern architecture.This paper has synthesized the natural geographical environment of Hancheng city, the historical records of local culture, custom and economic and the results of the before researchers. On the base of such material, we have clarified the architecture art of Dangjia village, defined its function and analyzed its characteristics. With a systemic point of view, we have combined gatehouse with quadrangle and researched the spatial form, characteristics and the ratio of the size of gatehouse and that of quadrangle. This radio is calculated by Golden section and LuBan ruler, which are of worldwide influence. The featured decorative parts of Dangjia village are listed one by one and researched for their decoration theme, decoration craft, and contains auspicious culture. The evolution process and trend of the Dangjia gatehouse have been researched also. We have taken as an example the design of the ancient Dangjia village gate, mining the cultural connotation and the technology of space arrangement, laying a foundation for the further research of the architectural art of Dangjia village. |
