| Ideal public space should serves for all users, and men and women have different patterns of behavior and psychological needs. So the space design should pay attention to the differences between male and female. At present, campus expansion and rebuilding is facing a new climax. As the main part and the most active factor of campus users, the students play an important role, and their perception and needs for campus environment are essential for the space design.In this context, this thesis takes the outdoor space of Wuhan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Huazhong Normal University, Huazhong Agricultural University as research objects, and analyzes the similarities and differences about outdoor space between male and female through the research on their perception and the use of the outdoor space.Research starts from this particular group of college students, to understand their common needs physiologically and psychologically, to analyze their outdoor activities and its characteristics and behaviors, in order to lay a foundation for further investigation of spatial cognition and spatial behavior for different genders. Secondly, to use questionnaires and cognitive map ways to investigate the overall image of the outdoor space, to analyze the spatial cognition differences between boys and girls, and to summarize theirs different spatial induction cognitive structures:spatial structure for male and fuzzy space structure for female. Thirdly, based on the differences in spatial cognition, the investigation for boys'and girls' outdoor activities are started from the typical outdoor space in campus environment, by content of the act recording and behavior map two ways, to analyze the behavior characteristics of boys and girls in the four spaces of campus plaza, public green space, building gardens, and sports venues. And summarized the boys and girls their own outdoor space behavior characteristics:purpose, extroverted, fearless of boys; no purpose, cohesion and conflict of girls. Fourthly, to summarize the outdoor space factors which may have influence on the outdoor activities for boys and girls according to the analysis for the type of space, space organization, and space feeling. Also, the differences between boys and girls themselves as well as their socio-cultural differences in outdoor activities will also be affected. At last, combined the investigation and analysis results, for the gender differences existing in the campus construction, I propose the design strategies of outdoor space from the three aspects of strengthening of the space identifiability, the establishment of gender integration space, and enhancement of the perception, thus to provide a reference basis for constructing a more humane outdoor space of the campus. |
