Lots of problems of heating network have risen due to the scale expanding of heating network and heating pipeline ageing. These problems on the one hand would make the heating network of normal operation, maintenance and extension harder and seriously, on the other hand they would cause large economic losses and influence the construction speed of new pipeline construction in new pipeline construction or network breakdown maintenance. Research showed that the traditional management mode has failed to meet the management requirements. The GIS technology which has important significance should be used in the heating network management system to realize the integrated management of space data, attribute data and topological relation, and make full use of the data of pipeline and terrain.Firstly, compare the geographic information system with the traditional management information system of heating network, reflecting the superiority of the GIS technology which be used in the heating network management system. Secondly, after determining appropriate tools to develop GIS of heating network, spatial database of Mapinfo and Microsoft Access attribute database have been established, then combining MapX component technology and using Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0, pipeline network GIS have been realized the functions which contains visualization, attributes inquiring, database updating, flashing and statistics. Finally, in order to fulfil the economic operation of heating network, the hydraulic checking calculation of heating network have been done to judge the existing equipment whether meeting the requirements or not. According to the operational data record of existing heating network GIS and the pipes'diameters, each pipe pressure drop and actual flow have been calculated. Finally, the hydraulic conditions of heating network were analyzed and the results would have a good guiding effect for the safe operation of heating network.Generally speaking, this system which has widely generality not only can meet the visual function of heating network management, and be able to make changes or update the database, and inquire the information of each heating network, but also realize the function of hydraulic checking calculation.
