Recent years, due to the population of ideas, like green economics, energy saving and sustainable development, higher requirements are proposed for future power network to further improve the efficiency of power network, cope with the challenge from environment, elevate the reliability of power supply and the quality of electrical power, perfect user service, and adapt to the requirements from energy sources and power markets. The concept of smart grid emerges as the times require, and becomes a researching and discussing focus in global power industry. It can be assumed that communication technology, information processing technology and control technology will support the smart grid in China, even in the whole world. Smart meter is an important fundamental device for the construction of smart grid. It accelerates the integration of smart meter industry, facilitates its industrialization, and supports the information, automation and interaction of power network. Upon above analysis, this paper realizes the design and research of the smart meter by using the MB95F418 chip.This article consists of the following three areas work:(1) Smart meter's design background, advantages and development statusFirstly, this paper analyzes the design background of smart meter, followed by the discussion of the advantages of smart meter and related applications, and finally discusses how to design smart meter based on the research status at home and abroad.(2) Smart meter's hardware design and software designAnalysis of the function of smart meter should have, and give the overall design block diagram of the instrument; Detailed discussion of the selection of the core chip, the design of data acquisition circuit, communication circuit and the realization of input-output system and gives the detailed parameters of the core chip-MB95F418; Using structured programming methods, achieve the switch's scan and handler program, data collection and the follow-up algorithm process program, the automatic meter reading program by infrared or RS485 communication mode, CPU card's read and write operating procedures and segment LCD's display driver code based on the use of microcontroller C programming language.(3) The analysis of the design's conclusions, the design's shortage and the prospect for the futureDescribes the test results of the design and analyze the conclusions, gives the inadequacies of the design and proposed future modifications and improvements. Finally, gives the prospect for the future of smart meter.This design realizes the function of power data timing and measurement, automatic charging, bidirectional communication, etc. It manages the energy consumption of residences with high quality and high efficiency, which is of great help for our residents. This paper aims to provide help to relative workers through the research into the system of smart meter. It is of no doubt that the market prospective of smart meter is quite broad.
