Adaptive Use Of Nan Tong Chinese Blue Calico In Modern Fashion Design

This thesis, compiled by my on-sight researches with the first-hand information collected, and analysis of the print patterns, is seeking for creative and innovative methodologies to redefine the beauty of the China Blue Calico and its practical reference value in modern clothing. In order to fulfill this goal, I have looked up a large number of related documents, and have visited Nantong– a city in Jiangsu Province in China which is also one of the few places where China Blue Calico can still be found quite popular. Thanks to that trip, I am able to experience in person the cultural existence of the China Blue Calico and to obtain enough information to conduct my research.The main theme of my thesis is to discuss about possible approaches to combine this traditional Chinese art element with modern fashion design. It describes the historical development of the China Blue Calico in Nantong and its artistic value. In addition, by elaborating the coloring, patterns and its manufacturing skills, the thesis is dedicated to bring this classical art form into the aesthetic of ordinary people and therefore give this precious heritage a new look.Nan Tong Chinese Blue Calico, one of the inseparable elements of Chinese culture, with its own artistic features and beautifulness and environment-friendly manufacturing, has essential reference value in Modern Fashion Design.
