As a special type of islands, non-residential islands play an increasingly important role in the national rights and interests. A new round of islands investigation has been launched nationwide, by the important means of remote sensing, the existence and location information of non-residential islands can be interpreted through remote sensing images, which can provide reference data for the field investigation. Meanwhile, with the special advantage of remote sensing, the investigation of non-residential islands can be carried out in the area which is hard to reach or sensitive. The follows are the major work of this paper.(1) By using SPOT5-based multi-source, multi-temporal high resolution remote sensing images, the non-residential islands of Guangdong Province have been identified under the interactive visual interpretation. A total of 1220 non-residential islands have been obtained and their distribution in 14 cities has been introduced. With the comparison of historical records, the changes of non-residential islands' number in cities have been given.(2) In the identification of non-residential islands, this paper attempted to use the Computer Recognition of object-based image analysis, specifically on the two experiments of speckle noise and false information remove. The removal of image speckle noise using multi-temporal high resolution images intersection, and the tested recognition accuracy of non-residential islands was 85.7%. The false information removal using knowledge rules classification method, and the tested recognition accuracy of segmented image objects was 92.3%.(3) Through field reconnaissance, a three-level land use classification system of non-residential islands in Guangdong province was established. Combined with the characteristics of SPOT-5 images, the interpretation signs of non-residential islands features were established.(4) According to the classification system and interpretation signs, the land use/land cover information of non-residential islands in Guangdong Province was extracted. Through the indexes calculation of land use development and structure diversity, the land use development level of non-residential islands in waters turn weakened from Pearl River estuary, western Guangdong to eastern Guangdong, and the structure diversity did not show significant regional differences.
