Importance has been recognized since 1990s that core competence of acompany has to be distinguished, cultivated, and improved. Especially, at the timewhen market competition has become intensified, it has been commoncharacteristics to forge core competence adapting to changes of market for thosecompanies that could eventually well survive and develop.Practices proved that nowadays, when culture and civilization of humansociety has been improved to a high level, enterprise would be bound to shape upits own core competence as actively combining social and economic benefits. Andit will be sure to obtain a profound potential for sustainable development in a longrun and never could be "defeated".Jiangxi Copper Company (JXCC) is now the largest copper mine andsmelter in China. In the process of expansion, it also has to be in the face of severecompetition and core competence becomes significantly important to it.This article, taking the actual situation of JXCC into consideration,summarizes the core competence of JXCC through an analysis of world copperresources, development of copper smelting sector, general situation of Chinesecopper industry, and features for competition among copper industry, according tothe basic theory on enterprise core competence and strategies. It also illustrateshow JXCC to build up and sharpen its competitive edge. Thereafter, it makesfurther analysis of strategy design of JXCC that is mapped up on core competitiveadvantages.A conclusion is finally reached as follows: from today onwards, JXCC shouldprotect and cultivate the existing competence, at the same time, it is necessary toupgrade its concept of "clients" it is serving for to the entire society, from theperspective of enterprises culture and value judgment, and based on socialbenefits, to gain its own economic returns and to further strengthen competence.Further to the core competence mentioned above, JXCC should putstrategic emphasis on control of resources and development of recycled economy,next to expansion of production capacity and extension of industrial chains. On thebackdrop of the technical and economic status at the company, it should participatein development of overseas copper resources, especially in neighboring countries.Establishment and implementation of core competence of JXCC depends on thatthe whole company, including employees at all levels, to upgrade concept and setup a good organizational structure in line with its strategies, and take effectivemeasures to carry out strategies and stipulate some regulations correspondingly.Sustained competitive advantages are supported by strategies of cultivation andextension of the core competence;to effectively carry out the strategies could wellguarantee core competence. The build-up of core competence at JXCC is key toimprovement of the entire strength of the company and build-up of a world-classmining corporation.
