Improving international competitiveness of Chinese port enterprises is essential to ensure the healthy and rapid development of Chinese port industry in a new environment. In entering the 21st century, the international economic environment and port market environment facing Chinese container port companies have undergone profound changes, and thus brought tremendous challenges to those companies. First, economic globalization has changed the environment, conditions and rules of competition for enterprises. Business resources are re-divided and re-combined on a global basis while mergers and acquisitions by container terminal operators have taken place with increasing frequencies, these bring forth more opportunities and possibilities on the one hand, and risks and challenges on the other, to both the world economy and the international container port industry. Second, China's accession to the WTO has opened her port market to a greater extent; therefore the "internationalization of competition in the domestic port market" becomes an inevitable tendency. With more foreign investors expanding their market shares in providing port-related services, market competition in China will intensify further.Chinese container port companies must integrate themselves into the international market, and by taking world's leading operators as examples, strive to promote their own competitiveness. Only in this way can they face up to the challenges of economic globalization and WTO accession, and survive and grow in a world market. Therefore, the strategy for internationalization by Shanghai Port Container Co., Ltd. (SPCC) is a valuable subject for study. This dissertation is divided into five parts: In Chapter 1, there is a brief introduction of the theories of strategic management for internationalization. In Chapter 2, it describes the development of container port industry, its current situation and future tendency of internationalization. In Chapter 3, from the respect of policy, economy, society, technology, it analyzes the influence of the macro environment; by taking the famous model of five underlying forces of competitiveness by Professor Michael E. Porter as an reference, and with regard to the characteristics of the port industry, it objectively evaluates the competition environment and points out the risk of international operation. In Chapter 4, based on the analysis of the internal resources and abilities of SPCC and by means ofSWOT model, it therefore concludes that the environment is full of both challenges and opportunities; SPCC should seize the opportunity, make the best use of its advantages while bypass the disadvantages, and to improve the international competitiveness as soon as possible. In Chapter 5, it sketches the contours of the strategic choice, proposes that SPCC should regard the East Asia as the key area and localization strategy as the key type of internationalization strategy. Besides, it discusses how to realize the strategic objectives from the entry mode of target market, the development form of overseas enterprises and the market tactics of business development. The research of this dissertation is of referential value to other Chinese service enterprises that plan to " go overseas".
