The city group in the middle reach of Yangtze river, as one of the three trans-regional city groups in the Yangtze river economic zone, is listed as the key area for China to deepen reform and opening up and to press ahead the new type of the urbanization in a comprehensive manner. The Development Plan for City Group in Middle Reach of Yangtze River released in April, 2015, specifies that “deepening reform and opening up is one of the priority of the plan” and the tourism and foreign economic cooperation are the two important signs of the regional internationalization. At present, the studies on the relation between tourism and the foreign economy in China mainly focus on the provincial level and lack related studies on the city level. Theoretically, there are no related studies on the mechanism that reveals the coupling coordination between tourism and foreign economy. Analyzing the time-space laws of the coupling coordination degree between tourism and foreign economy in the city group in the middle reach of Yangtze river is significant development and supplement to the related studies concerning tourism and also it plays an important role in promoting the sustainable development of the city group in the middle reach of Yangtze river. This thesis, with the coupling coordination theory as its entry point, is designed to study the relation between the tourism in city group in the middle reach of Yangtze river and the foreign economy. By building a model of the coupling coordination between the two and then conducting contrastive analysis of the coupling coordination of the two systems from 2003 to 2013, this thesis attempts to explore the tendency of the spatial changes of the coupling coordination of the two systems. Major findings of the thesis are as follows: first, based on the literature review, the coupling coordination of tourism in China goes through three phases and the object of the study mainly focus on three aspects; second, based on the analysis of the results of the coupling coordination from 2003 to 2013, the distribution proportion of the coupling coordination of the city group in the middle reach of Yangtze river takes on an oval patterns; third, over the past 11 years, the fluctuation in coupling coordination between the most developed cities and the least developed cities in this area remains little. The coupling coordination in the cities of Po Yang Lake city group embraces the most striking increase. And the overall level of the coupling coordination in the city group in the middle reach of the Yangtze river experienced rapid growth, which is boosted by the implementation of the Strategies of Mid-part Development and also the fact that per capita GDP in China’s tourism market exceeds 3000 US dollars; fourth, over the past 11 years, the coupling coordination between the tourism and the foreign economy in the city group in the middle reach of the Yangtze river has shifted form a weak negative correlation to a weak positive correlation, form a discrete state to a congregate state. In the meantime, the spatial structure features of the coupling coordination of this area is experiencing a change from scattered distribution with multi-centers to a coexisted distribution featured only one center with many sub-centers.
