Modern companies have shown a tendency to value more and more about people-their biggest assets, and the Management Trainee Program, is considered a major way for these firms to develop young talented people into all rounded potential future leaders.Management Trainee Program (MTP) originated in the western management practice. Through hiring, training, rotations and the final selections, it aims to be beneficial for both the young talents and the companies, albeit costly sometimes. However, recent practices have shown that MTP fails to deliver the optimal results. Take RE Groups as an example, RE group-as a Singapore headquartered, resources focused company, is now exploring opportunities in China and therefore urgently on demand of talented people. Since 2008, the company has been applying the MTP strategy but it turned out that 90% of the management trainees have left the company. This unexpected stunning figure has urged the company to investigate the reason for this phenomenon. This paper has set out to carefully investigate the complete process and deliverables of the MTP at RE group. The author’s own experience of engaging in the trainees recruitment practices has turned out beneficial for the study. Methodology of the paper includes documentation and quantitative data analysis in all four aspects in the process, namely, recruitment, development, engagement and employee retention. This study is considered to be largely useful for the management practices at RE group, and it also serves as a detailed case study for other firms who may like to reference and implement their own strategies based on the existing MTP practices.
