With the improvement of living standard, people pay more and more attention on public safety, so the video surveillance system has been used much more widely. Because of the rapid development of science and technology, video surveillance productions are fast developing in the way of digital, network-based and intelligent. This makes the video surveillance system not only used in security, but also in lots of other fields, such as production safety, driving safety and so on. In a word, video surveillance production has a great potential market.A network-based video surveillance system is introduced in this dissertation. Its core processor is TMS320DM6437, which is one of DaVinci series DSP produced by TI. It is specifically designed for video processing. This system can receive the high-definition digital image signal in real-time. The video process front end of DM6437 converts the Raw data to YUV format first, and then the application makes use of the Codec Engine framework to call the video processing algorithm library, which is used to implement image compression or intelligent surveillance analysis. The results will be transmitted to remote client end through the network. User can monitor the remote scene through a browser conveniently. The software running on PC is designed for user to control the hardware and receive the results generated by the algorithm library.The hardware design and the software framework design will be detailed introduced as follows. In the aspect of hardware design, the consideration about selecting chips, the principle of the function modules, and the important details on PCB design will be introduced. In the aspect of software design, several modules are introduced, including: the design of video input driver; the principle and realization of Codec Engine framework; the principle of XDM algorithm standard and how to packages the codecs; the networked design based on NDK; the PC software design and the method of thread synchronization and so on. The last part is the system specifications and the system demo.
